We set up around six HF rigs run off a generator. We have a BBQ grill & beer. The goal is to make as many contacts in the US as possible. Even if you don't have a license or a General/Extra class, you can TX under the clubs license with the rest of us there. It's a great opportunity to try HF frequencies. It's a rush to hear people from Florida, Texas, Idaho, etc. Then you log the frequency & call sign of the contact. It's a good day to ask lots of questions & put faces to the call signs you hear on the local nets.

Stay for the day or just an hour, bring the kids. Don't be shy, come on by! Here is the club site with a map & directions.

Does anyone know what the city regs are (and where to find them?) for allowable heights without permits and what the permit procedures are for getting a decent height?

I have already spent some time going between the planning dept and building depts where they keep saying "ya, a tv antenna/sat receiver is usually under 12 feet and you can just do it." Of course I would like to put up maybe a 25ft vertical. Nothing too fancy as I am sure my neighbors would not like a multi-element yagi... (Dipole will be easy to hide, I figured I could string one across my clothes line, got some good height on it too.)
Any info would be appreciated.

I know very little about radio technology other than what I remember from college and what I know from working with computer-related technology.

That said, I've for a while fancied the idea of a free-roaming, guerilla radio dance party:
1. The site is chose because it's deserted at the moment (a vacant lot, the beach, the financial district at midnight);
2. someone has a music source (DJ deck, laptop, ipod, whatever) and a transmitter.
3 Everyone is wearing radio headsets (like this: http://www.radioshack.com/sm-am-fm-stereo-headset-radio-headphones--pi-2103049.html)

Otherwise it's like a dance club, except there's a lot more room and (hopefully) much fewer drunk people. The radio/headset setup allows everyone to enjoy the loud music without annoying the neighbors. If you want to talk to someone, they don't have to shout :-)

Why would I want to do this? I still like to go dancing, but the only places available are dirty, NOISY, crowded bars and I cannot deal with it anymore. Also I just think it's a cool idea.

I figure the broadcast area should be small, so it wouldn't need that much power. The receiver end is taken care of . And of course the having-a-party-in-a-public-space-without-a-permit is its own issue. I just need help with the broadcast part. And I wanted to know what you think.

Reminder: ARRL Kids Day is Saturday, June 17(Jun 15, 2006) -- The next opportunity to bring Amateur Radio into the lives of young people is Saturday, June 17, when ARRL's second Kids Day of 2006 takes place. "It's their special day, so make the most of it," says ARRL Education and Technology Program Coordinator Mark Spencer, WA8SME. Kids day begins at 1800 UTC and continues until 2400 UTC. There's no limit on operating time. Suggested exchanges are first name, age, location and favorite color. Call "CQ Kids Day" to elicit contacts. "More hams are getting involved in Kids Day, and it shows," Spencer says. "Why not join in the fun and invite some kids to experience the 'magic of radio' in your shack June 17?" Sumner Weisman, W1VIV, did just that in January, and several youngsters (photo) enjoyed operating from the Framingham (MA) Amateur Radio Association's W1FY. Spencer suggests that while the kids are experiencing the fun of ham radio, their licensed mentors encourage them to pursue their own ham radio tickets. Suggested frequencies are 14.270 to 14.300 MHz, 21.380 to 21.400 MHz and 28.350 to 28.400 MHz, plus local VHF repeaters with the sponsor's permission. Licensees should observe third-party traffic restrictions when making DX contacts. These apply when unlicensed individuals communicate via ham radio. More information on Kids Day is in June QST, p 53.

Kid's Day Rules
Educational Activities: Recruitment & Education • Kid's Day Survey

Purpose: Kid's Day is intended to encourage young people (licensed or not) to enjoy Amateur Radio. It can give young people hands-on on-the-air experience so they might develop an interest in pursuing a license in the future. It is intended to give hams a chance to share their station with their children.
Dates: January 8 and June 17 2006.
CQ KID'S DAY DE WA9LGQ
Fun was the apparent result of a successful recipe--a recipe that included lots of preplanning, food, and Ham Radio. At the Indianapolis the Red Cross Chapter house, the Red Cross radio disaster group sponsored its very first Kids Day event. [Full Story]

Time: 1800 to 2400Z. No limit on operating time.
Suggested exchange: Name, age, location and favorite color. You are encouraged to work the same station again if an operator has changed. Call "CQ Kid's Day."
Suggested Frequencies: 28350 to 28400 kHz, 21380 to 21400, 14270 to 14300 kHz and 2-meter repeater frequencies with permission from your area repeater sponsor. Observe third party traffic restrictions when making DX QSOs.
Reporting: Logs and comments may be posted on the Internet. Those without Internet access may forward comments to the Boring Amateur Radio Club (address below).

Awards: all participants are eligible to receive a colorful certificate (it becomes the child's personalized sales brochure on ham radio). You can download this certificate for free, customized with the kids' names, after filling out our Kid's Day Survey, or send a 9 X 12 SASE to: Boring Amateur Radio Club, PO Box 1357; Boring, OR 97009. More details may be obtained by joining the Kid's Day Reflector.

Any other great spots? I'd think there must be some pretty good spots to operate around here I haven't tried yet.

My personality is not very technical, but I'm trying to expand my horizons. My friend David Dalton, the moderator of this tribe, was the one who got me involved in the Ham Radio world.

It's fun... But, it does feel at times that there aren't many younger people involved in Ham Radio. I totally like the old-timers, don't get me wrong, but it would be great to see my generation at least become more aware of the potentials of Ham Radio.

Sincerely,

So, hanging out on the local repeater is all too easy. Whereas getting an analog signal from point A to point B is a challenge -- even at VHF/UHF frequencies.

What kind of equipment do you guys have? The digital modes, such as PSK31 and even RTTY, work very well on VHF/UHF as long as your transceiver handles these modes. These narrow-band digital modes will get across the bay, or from the suburbs to San Francisco, much more efficiently than wide-band FM. Need help with these modes? Just ask...

Also, if anyone is working on learning the code and would like to do local code practice on 2 meters or 70 centimeters, please let me know...
