i'm new to ham and am interested in learning more about software radios. is anyone else interested in this topic? what's the latest state of the art? are there kits, apart from the super expensive gnu radio hardware?

Re: software defined/controlled ham radio interest?
Wed, June 27, 2007 - 12:21 AMSDR is starting to be available in special applications, but for all practical purposes it's not widely available anywhere outside of the purely experimental field. For the most part, it's a can of worms whenever the discussions about it start on the boards I'm active on. The one thing that can't be duplicated by SDR (at least not with any equivalent results) are the interference and filtering tasks that actual hardware is better suited at performing. This is what slows the development of SDR in general. SDR's development is largely driven by the IT and wireless LAN portions of the computer industry who treat all wireless devices as little more than black boxes. There is a severe lack of understanding on the part of many SDR developers on how RF behaves, about interference, how to deal with co-channel users and other basic but critical topics.
I believe a lot of this has hampered it's development into being a truly viable technology for anything other than experimental uses. A truly software defined radio wouldn't be bound by emissions restrictions. Until technology makes significant advances to the point where a single portable radio can be programmed for any frequency / modulation / emission standard / air-interface, it's uses are going to be extremely limited.
There are what I refer to as 'accessory technologies' such as VOIP services (IRLP and echolink for ham) that have been a big hit in the radio world. Other advances like 900MHz ISM (frequency hopping) radios are rapidly becoming cheaper in the market and more available. I'd love to see ISM radios being used by the general public more at large events (like Burning Man, where 10,000 people on 14 channels of FRS just doesn't cut it), but the general public doesn't understand what a few dollars more would give them.

Re: software defined/controlled ham radio interest?
Sat, June 30, 2007 - 10:17 AMSounds perfect. I'm not looking for something that runs perfectly out of the box - I'm looking to experiment and to learn by experimenting. I found a number of old articles in QST about this, and some old websites, but nothing recent.
Where do I connect with these other experimentors?
Thanks for the info!

Re: software defined/controlled ham radio interest?
Sun, July 22, 2007 - 12:34 PMWell, I'm not aware of any specific SDR discussion groups. There are a few lists that occasionally bring up the subject and have participants on them with a wealth of knowledge in the 2-way radio, cellular and public safety communications who can all chime in on where the best information could be found. Many follow current technology trends closely, and post anything that's new or a wealth of information to the list. Groups on yahoogroups that you should check out and subscribe to are...
radios4sale (just good for used radio gear, all the commercial stuff, not ham)
LMR (general Land Mobile Radio discussion. mostly 2-way shop owners, techs, Public Safety communications techs and the like)
PWF (Private Wireless Forum. a little more political and disucssions on trends and direction of the wireless industry. lots of nextel/sprint bashing! :-) )
your findings of old QST articles and not much else unfortunately is testament to the state of SDR (a friend and I recently coined the phrase "Serious Development Required"). there may be a discussion group or two out there about SDR, which I wouldn't be surprised if yahoogroups was hosting. Give that a whirl and good luck.
