San Francisco Antenna regs

So now that I want to start working HF, I am looking at antenna's at the home QTH.

Does anyone know what the city regs are (and where to find them?) for allowable heights without permits and what the permit procedures are for getting a decent height?

I have already spent some time going between the planning dept and building depts where they keep saying "ya, a tv antenna/sat receiver is usually under 12 feet and you can just do it." Of course I would like to put up maybe a 25ft vertical. Nothing too fancy as I am sure my neighbors would not like a multi-element yagi... (Dipole will be easy to hide, I figured I could string one across my clothes line, got some good height on it too.)

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks and 73's,
-Tony

you'll probably be able to get away with a dipole far easier than you would a yagi.

as far as the city's reg's are, i wouldn't worry too much. unless someone complains, you're not going to run into any issues. like you said, a longwire is far less conspicuous than a multi element yagi would be.

the thing i'd worry about most is whether or not you're going to cause interference to anyone's tv's in the immediate area. you might want to check that out first if you plan on working at anything above 25-50w.

i'll poke a friend of mine who works w/ the city and see if he has any leads on antenna regs in the meantime.

If you're living in a place that allows outdoor TV antennas, you might want to consider the Butternut Butterfly series, such as the HF5B.

It's not cheap, and it can be a bit nasty to assemble, but it'll play very well.

I am thinking I might as well just put up a slim vertical and hope no one complains about the 25ft aerial above the house.

Such a pain to try and do it the right way.

As for interfering with TVs... I figured that by next February it will become a non issue. With the new digital TV system HAM does not interfere with it right?

Now the question what is right method? Should I make a little flyer/note to give to all of my neighbors around me telling them of my intentions and give them a chance to oppose it (and complain) or just do it?

If there is one thing I have learned in the past about psychology of problems... If I do tell the neighbors, I would put up an antenna and not use it for a few months. I would let the neighbors know that if they are suddenly experiencing problems that they should let me know and I will (as per FCC rules) fix the problem. The trick to this is that since I will not use the antenna it will merely be a dummy, a placebo of sorts just to see who complains about their problems. After I hear them say "ohh my tv, my phone, blah blah." I will be able to document it as a pre-existing condition and tell them to fix it themselves. Something I have learned in the past, if given the opportunity people will want you to fix their stuff even if it is not related.
